Understanding the Gendered Impacts of Climate Change in Egypt: Towards Gender- Responsive Adaptation Strategies.
Overview
Climate change poses significant challenges to communities worldwide, impacting livelihoods, ecosystems, and social dynamics. In Egypt, a country particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, understanding these impacts through a gender lens is essential for developing effective adaptation strategies that address the diverse needs and vulnerabilities of different gender groups. This concept note outlines a research project aimed at investigating the gendered dimensions of climate change in Egypt and identifying gender-responsive adaptation measures to enhance resilience and promote gender equality.
Objectives
- To assess the differential impacts of climate change on men and women in Egypt, considering their roles, responsibilities, and access to resources.
- To explore the gender-specific coping strategies and adaptive capacities employed by communities in response to climate change.
- To identify barriers and opportunities for gender-responsive climate adaptation interventions in Egypt.
- To raise awareness and promote dialogue on the intersection of gender and climate change among stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public.
Expected Outcomes
- A nuanced understanding of the gendered impacts of climate change in Egypt, including differential vulnerabilities, adaptive capacities, and resilience strategies.
- Identification of gender-responsive adaptation measures and policy recommendations to enhance climate resilience and promote gender equality.
- Increased awareness and dialogue on the gender dimensions of climate change among stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public.
- Strengthened partnerships between government agencies, NGOs, academia, and communitybased organizations to address the gendered impacts of climate change in Egypt
Responsibilities
- Design research methodologies, tools, and sampling strategies in consultation with the project team.
- Conduct literature reviews and desk research to inform the study.
- Facilitate data collection activities, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using appropriate methods.
- Produce a high-quality research report and presentations outlining findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Participate in project meetings and stakeholder engagements as required.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in gender studies, environmental studies, social sciences, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting gender-sensitive research, preferably in the context of climate change or environmental studies.
- Proficiency in mixed-methods research design and data analysis.
- Strong analytical and writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
- Familiarity with gender-responsive and participatory research approaches.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

- Research Methodology Proposal: A detailed proposal outlining the research methodologies, tools, and sampling strategies to be employed in the study.
- Literature Review: A comprehensive literature review summarizing existing research on the gendered impacts of climate change in Egypt and related topics.
- Data Collection Plan: A finalized plan for data collection activities, including timelines.

- Draft Research Report: A draft version of the research report, including sections on background, methodology, findings, and preliminary conclusions. The draft report should be approximately 50% complete.
15 August 2024
- Completed Research Report: A finalized research report of approximately 50 to 60 pages, inclusive of all sections (e.g., executive summary, introduction, methodology, findings, conclusions, recommendations).
- Executive Summary: A concise executive summary highlighting key findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the research project.
