Freedom of Sexual Orientation

The right to sexuality incorporates the right to express one's sexuality and to be free from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Specifically, it relates to the human rights of people of diverse sexual orientations, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, and the protection of those rights, although it is equally applicable to heterosexuality. The right to sexuality and freedom from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is based on the universality of human rights and the inalienable nature of rights belonging to every person by virtue of being human.

Sexual freedom is a human right. It means having the freedom to define, explore and experience your own sexuality as you want, without fear of repression or violence.

In a region where people are discriminated against based on sexual choices, orientation, and preferences, RAWSA (Regional Advocacy for Women’s Sustainable Advancement) Alliance for  Africa & Arab States works relentlessly, being subject to threats, to ensure that all people are aware of their bodily rights, integrity, and freedom of sexual preferences and orientation regardless of their genders. Valuing the importance of international conventions, the Alliance has adopted the Human Rights Declaration, the CEDAW convention, Agenda 2030, and the SDGs, which all emphasize the freedom of expression and freedom of sexuality and sexual choices. RAWSA (Regional Advocacy for Women’s Sustainable Advancement) Alliance for  Africa & Arab States is working with several international allies and organizations to support LGBTQ+ populations, to mainstream these human rights in the region, and to ensure the freedom of everyone based on these inherent rights.
