RAWSA WOMEN ALLIANCE statement on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
Each year on 6 February, the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) aims to strengthen efforts on the elimination of this harmful practice against women and girls.
The female genital mutilation, which comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons, is recognized internationally as a violation of the women rights, health and integrity of girls and women bodies. Complications from FGM endanger the physical and mental well-being of women and girls.
RAWSA WOMEN ALLIANCE MENA believes FGM is a severe human rights violation that cannot be tolerated. FGM has to end in all Arab countries, especially in Egypt and Sudan where more than 85% of girls have to undergone this harmful procedure.
“FGM is harmful to women and girls and can have severe implications in the future,” said RAWSA WOMEN ALLIANCE Partnerships Manager Tatenda Jane Dzvarai. “RAWSA believes in the Sustainable Development Goals and is committed to help end FGM in the region by 2030.”
